I’d rather not split my cloud-brain… I know it shouldn’t matter, but from an accounting and administration perspective, it would be easier if I could store all my content in Rackspace Cloud Files vs. AWS S3.
i’d be happy to be a beta tester if you like and we are using local files for now and can continue until you’re ready.
we could certainly roll our own system to do this, but i like all your work, and would love to help support you (not to mention, your solution is going to be leagues better than mine)… so i’d love to hop on board with this. We have three major sites and a few hundred smaller ones which we’d migrate over to this method of handling content uploads (videos and images)… so we’d end up being a worthwhile client.
PS: you know, while you’re at it, if you ended up writing a cakephp datasource for cloudfiles too… (nudge nudge
Alright, Rackspace support just moved to the top of my todo list : ).
About the CakePHP datasource: The transloadit website is in CakePHP, the service however is in node.js - so the code would not be re-usable for cake. That being said: we are planning to add support for removing files from Amazon S3, so we could do the same for rackspace. Are there any other things you would need from their API?
Anyway, how was cake fest? I hope you guys had a great time, too bad we couldn’t be there.
Cakefest was fun. The first half of the first day I was afraid I wasn’t going to learn much, but I quickly got lots of great information and techniques. Well worth the investment of time and money, in my opinion. (though I think a smaller workshop, like the one I met you at, is still more ideal for me)
I’m aware the backend is in node, been reading your posts about it. I was just mentioning offhand that if you had a datasource for cakephp, i’d love to benefit form it.
As for what we need from the API… Ideally I’d like to be able to list files as well as add and delete… I’d keep my own database of files sent to transloadit, but ideally I’d like to be able to list/search to ensure that there are no orphans and do a basic clean up.
Also - this is might not needed in the API, but since the clouds work as a CDN, the CDN URL might be a good thing to be able to get explicitly from the API.
I have a working version of /cloudfiles/store robot up and running. I’m going add some more error handling tomorrow and then do the official release.
Would you have some time this week to test it out soon? I’d love to get your feedback on it. Maybe we could also set up a short call to discuss the sites you’d like to move over.
yes. My Skype name is ‘transloadit’, just add me there and chat me up today (earlier = better). If you want to use iChat / something else just let me know.
